Department

An organisational unit within a tenant — Finance, HR, Legal, Operations etc. — used to scope permissions and ownership.

Department

A department is an organisational unit within a Papyrus tenant — Finance, HR, Legal, Operations, IT, Marketing, etc. Departments are the primary unit of scoping for permissions, folder hierarchies, and analytics.

Each tenant defines its own departments. Departments can nest: County HQ → Sub-County → Ward, or HQ → Branch → Team.

Each user belongs to a primary department (set at user creation) and can be granted access to additional departments. The primary department determines default permissions on uploads, default folder for new documents, and default analytics scope.

Departments are critical to RBAC. Permission templates typically grant access “to department members”; folder roots are department-scoped; workflows route to “department head” by resolving the department's named head.
