eSignature

An electronic signature — typed, drawn, or uploaded — capturing intent to sign a document. Legally equivalent to wet signatures for most commercial contracts in Kenya.

eSignature

An eSignature (electronic signature) is any electronic representation of intent to sign — typed name, drawn signature on a touchscreen, uploaded signature image, or click-through agreement. Under Kenya's Information and Communications Act (KICA), eSignatures are legally equivalent to wet signatures for most commercial contracts.

eSignatures in Papyrus include:

  • Identity capture (recipient's email, verified)
  • Intent capture (explicit “I agree” action)
  • Timestamp, IP, device
  • Cryptographic hash of the document at signing
  • Tamper-evident audit certificate appended to the signed PDF

The legal validity depends on the appropriateness of the method for the document's value and purpose. A click-to-agree is fine for a routine T&C; a typed signature on an employment contract is fine; a high-value contract or deed may require a higher-tier method (Digital Signature with PKI).
