Folder

A folder in Papyrus is a named container in the document hierarchy. Each document lives in exactly one folder (no multi-parent folders). Folders can nest to arbitrary depth, though best practice keeps the tree shallow.

Folders carry:

  • Permissions: who can do what within (inherited downward unless overridden)
  • Metadata schema: which custom fields are required on documents in this folder
  • Default classification: documents uploaded here default to this category
  • Default workflow: documents uploaded here trigger this workflow (optional)
  • Retention policy: documents here follow this retention policy (unless overridden)

Folders are not the primary way users find documents — search and tags are. Folders are primarily a governance construct: they define the permission and policy context for the documents in them.
