Uploading Your First Document
Four ways to get a document into Papyrus — drag-and-drop, browse, email, and mobile scan.
Uploading Your First Document
The four ways to upload
1. Drag-and-drop (web)
The fastest. From any page on Papyrus:
- Drag a file from your desktop or file explorer
- Drop it anywhere on the page
- Choose the destination folder
- Add tags (optional — AI will suggest some)
- Click “Upload”
The document begins processing immediately. You'll see a notification when classification and extraction complete (usually within 30 seconds).
2. The Browse button
If you prefer dialogs over dragging:
- Go to Documents
- Click “Upload” (top-right)
- Choose “Browse files”
- Select one or more files
- Configure metadata and submit
3. Email-to-Papyrus
Each tenant has a unique inbox address: inbox@{tenant}.papyrus.io. Forward an email with attachments to that address — both the email body and attachments are ingested.
Useful when:
- You receive supplier invoices by email
- A counterparty sends signed documents
- Field officers email reports from their phone
4. Mobile scan
Open the Papyrus mobile app:
- Tap the camera button
- Point at the document
- The app auto-detects edges, deskews, and enhances
- Confirm, set tags, upload
The mobile capture pipeline produces OCR-ready PDFs.
What happens after upload
Once Papyrus has the document:
- Classification — AI guesses the document type (Invoice, Contract, Employee Record, etc.) with a confidence score
- OCR — If the document is scanned/image, text is extracted via Tesseract
- Metadata extraction — Key fields (dates, amounts, parties, KRA PIN, etc.) are parsed
- Embedding — The document becomes semantically searchable via the Copilot
- Notification — You're notified if any human review is needed (low-confidence classification, missing required field)
